The Short Story
I was born a poor, black child in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14 March, 1966. In the preceding year, Singapore was expelled from the Federation of Malaya following the 1964 race riots arising from the frequent political, economic, financial and social policy disagreements between the State of Singapore and the federal government of Malaysia. So, three months after I was born, my dad moved us to Singapore. I was educated in Singapore until I was thirteen, then I went to The Lawrenceville School, a private boarding, prep school in New Jersey. I received my B.S. in Information Decision Systems from Carnegie Mellon. My college career was interrupted by a return to Singapore to serve my two and half year mandatory, military National Service, in which I was commissioned as an Infantry Combat Officer.
